"The Journey Is The Reward" Book
"We have received so many phone calls, letters, and e-mails over the years from people who have lost loved ones," explained Doug LaViolette. "Many of them ask us to send information about our story and how we are healing from our loss. We've never really had anything to send them-until now."
The Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation released “The Journey is The Reward: A story of courage, hope, and inspiration” by Doug, Renee, and Kim LaViolette with Karolyn A. Gazella on January 23, 2003, Brian’s 26th Birthday.
"This book is about healing from loss," explained Gazella. "It is a spiritual journey that describes the LaViolettes' story. However, there are also stories of others who have experienced loss, as well as practical information about how to cope with loss."
The book was written to help others along their journey--especially those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. All proceeds from the sale of this book will go directly to the Brian LaViolette Scholarship Foundation. "Our goal is to award more scholarships next year than ever before, and at the same time, help others heal," explained Doug.

The Journey is the Reward, in the thoughts of Advisory Board member, Kristin Coleman,
“As I prepared myself for the first advisory board meeting, I felt it fitting to read “The Journey is The Reward.” As it happened, I went on a weekend getaway with four friends to a quiet lake in northern Wisconsin. It was in the early morning when everyone was asleep that I fell deep into the pages of this great book. An easy read with captivating perspectives of the lives of those who knew and loved Brian. At one point when the book spoke of the actual accident, there was a loon calling on the lake. I had to close the book for a minute to regroup.
I began to think about the people that lived on this lake and how tragedy could occur at any moment with the boating and water fun that takes place daily. As we drove home later that day, one of the ladies I was with was sharing how she lost her mother in law and her sister in law recently. They passed 4 weeks of each other to the day. She was burdened with the preparations for a large "Celebration of life" that was to take place at her house. From the back seat, I could feel her pain and knew she needed to find higher ground. Maybe it was an ironic moment but the book in my lap was open page 86 where the poem “I Am Always With You” was. I had been sharing parts of the book with them but now I read the poem to her.
We all got teary eyed as I read it. Then I moved to that part of the book that offers perspectives on healing. On page 112 there are bullet points that I randomly read to her about how to navigate her journey. It felt like the words jumped out and were absolutely perfect for my friend.
We went our ways that Sunday afternoon. That week I met with Doug, Renee and the advisory board for the meeting. For my small chapter of this story, I was blown away with connecting the faces to the entries of the book. I felt like I was floating during the meeting as the energy and dedication of all the members overflowed in my heart. I watched Doug's face as he moderated the meeting. How he smiled and bantered with Kim and Renee was quite special. What an absolute game changer for me to have read the book to gain such a huge understanding for the foundation.
For those about to read this book, fasten your seat belts because this Journey truly is the Reward!”
